We recently met with a museum who had some underutilized spaces. They wanted to make better use of their square-footage, while potentially introducing some new staffing efficiencies. We recommended they begin by creating a need/want list.
With any facility, knowing where to start can be overwhelming, so we developed a template to help simplify the process. You can download it here.
To use the spreadsheet:
Start by filling in the rows. Enter the number of folks and functions, which should be accommodated. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, insert those items. Be sure to delete out elements that don’t apply.
Once the rows are complete, you’ve essentially created your first estimate of space needs.
Now, it’s time to refine the results. Begin completing the columns, adjusting room sizes to more accurately reflect your needs.
After the columns are finished, you will have a final estimate of your space needs.
Use this spreadsheet as a catalyst for conversation. Having these numbers pulled together can help you determine next steps and makes discussions surrounding changes more productive.
